In General

People from all over the world are drawn to the Sedona area to experience its natural beauty. Most visitors see Sedona on the ground on the trails or from a tour jeep or trolley, but more and more are now seeing it from the air. By mid-1999, the sounds of tour airplanes were so intrusive and had become so much of an issue that, in response to complaints from the community, the Sedona Airport Authority asked KSB to form a group to learn what might be done about the noise. That group, formed from members of the community at large as well as KSB members, became the Sedona (Citizens) Noise Abatement Committee (SNAC).

Now in 2015 the issue of noise has re-surfaced for a variety of reasons.  Disturbance of wilderness and national forest trails and sites by helicopter tours and private off-road vehicles has increased.  In addition, the development of a Master Plan for the Sedona Airport has called for public comment (Click Here to read KSB Noise Abatement Committee comments to Coffman & Associates on Sedona Airport Master Plan) .

As a result, KSB has worked with the city of Sedona to form a Citizens Engagement Group under the auspices of the city to address the issues of noise mitigation at the airport and elsewhere.

Many of you have expressed your interest and concerns about the operations of the Sedona Airport, and in particular the helicopter tours that conduct their business from that location.  For several months now a Citizen’s Engagement Group, formed with the authority of the City of Sedona, has been working on this issue.

The Citizen’s Engagement Group has met with the airport authority (SAA), the helicopter tour operators, County officials, and forest service personnel.  You may have read that Yavapai County had expressed an interest in taking over the operations of the airport, which for reasons that are unclear, they backed off of recently. At this time, it is important for our elected officials to hear directly from you.
